VOLUNTEER TUTOR DESCRIPTION

 

POSITION: Schools of Hope Volunteer Tutor

SUPERVISOR: Danielle Vaughn, Volunteer Coordinator, 785.776.7787

SITE: Bergman Elementary School 3430 Lombard Drive Manhattan, Kansas 66503

 

OBJECTIVE:

  • To assist children enrolled in kindergarten through fourth grade in developing reading and math skills. The tutor will also act to enhance self-esteem and confidence in the child through patience and encouragement.
  • To participate in a widespread community initiative collaborated by the United Way of Manhattan, R.S.V.P. of the Flint Hills, USD 383, Capitol Federal Bank, Verizon Wireless, and other partners.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Commit to a minimum of one hour a week for one academic school year. 
  • Assist children in reading, writing and other literacy-based skills, as well as math, in cooperation with the teaching staff.
  • Complete a tutor log following each session.
  • Direct any questions or concerns to the volunteer coordinator.
  • Notify the volunteer coordinator in advance if you are expecting to be absent. In the event of an unexpected absence, call the volunteer coordinator as soon as possible so that the teacher and student can be notified of cancellation to avoid disappointment or disruption to the teacher and student. If a tutor consistently neglects his/her responsibilities this can be a detriment to the routine and learning abilities of the child. Volunteers are expected to respect the best interest of the child by honoring the weekly commitment.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read and write the English language.
  • Interest in and comfort working with students.

 

ORIENTATION AND TRAINING

  • The tutor coordinator will be available to discuss and to address any concerns.
  • Supplemental handouts, manuals and online training will be made available concerning reading skills and on dealing with specific issues that address the individual needs of children of varying ages and backgrounds.
